Rowe further revised and elaborated upon this classification in 1959 and 1972 and results of this work were published in a report (Rowe 1972) and 1 to 6.336 million map. The concept behind the eight Forest Regions is that they are major geographic zones characterized by stable climax vegetation with broad uniformity in physiognomy and composition. Rowe states that their approximation to truly climatically controlled forest "formations" is not absolute though some relationship may exist but was never tested. The Forest Regions are further subdivided into a total of 90 Forest Sections, which were conceived as geographic areas with distinctive patterning of vegetation and physiography. Rowe's 1972 report expanded upon his 1959 and Haliday's 1937 reports but as well drew upon additional contributions from many other national organizations and individuals. The first version of the coverage was digitized by Kim Yourth from the original five large scale (each about 1 x 1.5m in size) mylars (British Columbia-Yukon, Alberta-Saskatchewan-Manitoba-NW Territories, Ontaria, Quebec-Atlanitic provinces) used to prepare the original 1 to 6.336 million scale map in Rowe's 1959 and 1972 reports. The mylar maps included a base map with lakes, rivers and provincial boundaries used for registration in the GIS. Coastal areas were shown as "ballons" to allow for intersection with higher resolution base coverages. Marcell Marsan added the attribute coding data for each Region and Section and it was checked by Steve Gray prior to report production (S. Gray pers. comm.). Separate Region and Section coverages (Filenames: rowregcan, rowseccan) were provided to Dennis Clarke (Forest Insect and Disease Survey - FIDS) at the Pacific Forestry Centre in 1991. These were combined into a single coverage (Filename: rowsecreg). For later National Forest Inventory (NFI) reports this coverage was subsequently bounded by a 1-2 million scale outline coverage of Canada and line work cleaned up to eliminate hanging lines or close polygons along the coastline (Filename: rowes83.e00). The revised second version of the coverage was prepared in 2008-02 as part of the CFSNET sponsored project (Forest Ecosystem Mapping in Canada - FEMiC). The first version (rowes83.e00) was obtained from the NFI group (D. Clarke) and revisions made included changes to base map registration from CANFI to one consistent with current standards (GeoBase Geopolitical boundaries-Level 1 Ver1., NRCAN 2002-12-16), additional information was added to the attribute records to provide full names for the Forest Regions and Sections in addition to CANFI codes, to be consistent with those used in Rowe's 1972 report (C. West and G. Thandi). The table of those attributes and their relation to the CANFI coding used in version 1 of the coverage were provided by S. Gray.
