Title: Canada Ecoclimatic Regions Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Online_Linkage: https://pfc.cfsnet.nfis.org/mapserver/ecoclimatic/htdocs/spatial_data/ecoclimatic_v2.zip Description: Abstract: Ecoclimatic regions can be generally defined as "broad regions on the earth's surface characterized by distinctive ecological responses to climate as expressed by vegetation and reflected in soils, wildlife and water." (Ecoregions Working Group 1989 p1). In the context of the ecoclimatic regions in the EWG 1989 report, they chose "gradients of ecologically effective macroclimate (as expressed by the vegetation) as the defining criteria." The hierarchical classification used defines ten ecoclimate provinces and 72 ecoclimatic regions for the terrestrial surface of Canada. The EWG was composed of national and regional specialists working in the 1980-1989 to develop a consistent national classification. The group drew upon Environment Canada's Meterological Services climate normal data from 1951-1980 to develop representative climate diagrams for each EC region as well as a variety of national and provincial maps and reports to identify, describe, and map boundaries of the ecoclimatic provinces and regions. Scanned PDF copies of the English and French versions of the EWG 1989 report and JPEG scans of the 1 to 7.5 million scale map are provided on the same web site as this coverage. Sustainable Development Branch, Conservation and Protection, Environment Canada, Ottawa, Ont. 199 pp. Report with map at 1 to 7.5 million scale Purpose: Scientific Research. The objective of the Forest Ecosystem Mapping in Canada (FEMiC) site is to bring together current and historic geospatial coverages, maps, and reports used for classifying forest ecosystems in Canada at the national as well as provincial and territorial level as resource for future vegetation mapping projects and source for previously unavailable coverages. Credits: FEMiC was conceived and coordinated by J.A. Trofymow, interactive web GIS programming by C. West, with contributions and suggestions from K. Baldwin, C. Ferster, S. Gray, N. Laflamme, K. Lawrence, B. Low, P. O’Donnell and R. Quenet. From discussion in 2005 with the technician, M. Siltanen, working with the CFS Scientist leading the EC project at the time, Steve Zoltai (deceased), the first version of the EC coverage was prepared by digitization of several larger scale mylars that were used in preparation of the final map that appears in the EWG 1989 report. Those mylars are no longer available. The revised second version of the coverage was prepared in 2006-07 as part of the CFSNET sponsored project (Forest Ecosystem Mapping in Canada - FEMiC). The first version (ecoclimatic.e00) was obtained from the CanFI group and revisions made included changes to registration to one consistent with current standards (GeoBase Geopolitical boundaries-Level 1 Ver1., NRCAN 2002-12-16), clean up to remove line work of provincial boundaries and close open polygon boundaries (Joanne White), correct attribute information for those polygons, add additional information to the attribute records to provide full names for the Ecoclimatic Provinces and Regions and codes to be consistent with those used in the EWG 1989 report (C. West).
